Consider the positions reversed Rekindle... Fed up with having to replace Battleships you decide that if you can't beat them you'll join them. You know what the rats in the area do in the way of damage types - let's assume it's Serpentis and therefore Kinetic and Thermal - so you know what ratters will be tanked for. You take a Vexor, fit it with a reper, 1600 plate, Damage Control and Nano; an AB, Warp Disruptor and Tracking Disruptor; three light blasters and a couple of nosferatu, you load your Drone bay with Valkyries and you head out.
In system you see one other character in local, a three year-old, you warp to safe and scan the system.
There he is, an Apoc, a load of 'roids and a couple of Serpentis Rear Admirals and frigates. You narrow him down to a belt and warp in. He's tanked for Kinetic and Thermal, he's sitting around half cap, when your Valkeries hit him he's in trouble. You orbit him closely enough to nos him and fast enough that his guns won't bear, for that matter he's having trouble bringing his guns to bear on the rats because of your Tracking Disruptor. He has drones perhaps but you have blasters for those and even if you can't hit them you only have to hold them until his ship explodes and that's what the plate is for. If he turns round and shows his teeth, by scraming you in return, by webbing you or by nos'ing you in return you run, get out of range of the scrammer and warp out. If he's loading Stabs then shrug philosophically when he warps out and move on.
What's the result? Most likely a dead Apoc, he can't handle you and the rats, he can't run and he can barely fight. It's a gank, there's no hulling him and ransoming him, without the rats you can't kill him and with them he'll be dead anyway.
So what have we learned? We've learned that - in this situation - Skill points aren't important, or rather not as important as set-up and situation. The Vagabond which hit you had a couple of advantages over your Vexor, it's quicker and can take more damage but more importantly it uses projectiles - its damage can be varied more easily than your drones. Skillpoints don't define who will win a fight, the person who forces the fight onto his terms is the one who'll win. It's the classic Thorax vs Caracal, if the Caracal can keep the 'rax at long range it will win, if it fails to do so and the 'rax gets close enough to use its Blasters then the Caracal dies.
